There were challanges due to the war - we did get several projects finished, and made good progress. The Afghan people were sincere and honorable - I was privillaged to work with many hard working trustworthy Afghan Engineers, as well as the same qualities in the local people.

A robust nation, and much like the ancient Spartans, bred to live in a tough environment. Amongst many others, one sad indictment of that influence are the valuable opium fields and their origin. Opium was always present, originally used on a very small scale for medicinal purposes after introduction from Asia, but the British Empire needed more opium than the Indian fields could produce and it was the main currency in their East India trading, via intermediary smugglers to obtain vital Chinese trade goods, whilst the GB suffered a shortage of foreign currency particularly in the 18th & 19th century. The Chinese would only accept silver, although this was later 'ameliorated' by gunboat diplomacy. Every problem present in modern Afghanistan, particularly in Helmand Province and in the Kashmir on the other side of the border, is a consequence of British colonial rule in the late 's. Indigenous 'Pashtunistan' Taliban are opposed to democratic processes in general and specifically in the case of women! Pashtuns are the largest sub group represented in the present day Afghan population. The linchpin, is 'Pashtunistan'. According to a noted 16th century Persian chronicler Mahommed Kasim Ferishta’s book 'The History of Mahomedan Power in India', the Arab Muslims had conquered this mountainous region in the 7th century. They were responsible for introducing the Pashtuns to Islam; it's also understood some Arabs settled in the Suleiman Mountains amongst the Pashtuns. The country has been fought over by empire builders and conquerors for millennia. Its important strategic position served as the invasion route from central Asia into the Indian subcontinent, and the shortest route to the Indian Ocean. This invasion route had two way traffic, and was used by the 'great and the good'; the British fought three wars with the Afghans in , and . Of course, we later returned with NATO and the Northern Alliance in ; we're still engaged running the Afghan officer training academy, whilst other Brit troops provide force protection! Afghanistan has played a key part in British history; it could also be suggested that it was an 'Achilles Heel'. In nearly two decades of conflict with control of the poppy field underpinning Taliban economics, forced NATO (unintentionally I might add) to improve the opium harvest nearly 700%, whilst attempting to help farmers improve their crop harvests through improved irrigation and agricultural techniques! So, whilst the 'street price' is now only pennies, the reduced benefit of the raw opium 'gate price' keeps the indigenous population in poverty. Opioid dependence is now a significant health threat in the US and a growing one in Europe.
